But Alice Coltrane was both—and more. She didn’t just push jazz into new spiritual realms; she dragged it there in a chariot made of stars, incense smoke, and polyphonic wisdom.
Born in Detroit in 1937, Alice McLeod (before the Coltrane) was a pianist with gospel roots and fingers that could whisper or thunder depending on the weather in her soul. She studied classical music, dabbled in bebop, married John Coltrane (yes, that John Coltrane), and then—after his death—rocketed straight out of jazz’s gravitational pull and into the astral plane, where she built a musical temple made of harp glissandos, Wurlitzer wobbles, and Vedic chanting.
If Sun Ra was from Saturn, Alice was from the shimmering part of the sky you see behind your eyelids after deep meditation—or a very good nap.
Her albums sound like sermons for aliens who love modal scales. Journey in Satchidananda is the sonic equivalent of floating down the Ganges in a glitter canoe while someone sprinkles holy water on your chakras. Her harp playing doesn’t obey earthly laws—it swoops, it sparkles, it laughs in the face of logic. And when she switched to organ? Lord help us. And yet, it was never about ego. She didn’t perform much in her later years—not because she couldn’t, but because she was busy translating Sanskrit scriptures and communing with the Infinite.
